Scene Structure & Check-ins
A simple framework for planning, running, and closing a scene with regular check-ins.
The three phases
- Before: negotiation, limits, signals, and logistics.
- During: gradual pacing and scheduled check-ins.
- After: a clear end signal followed by aftercare.
Check-in practices
Check-ins should be easy to answer and never feel like a test.
- Ask short questions: 'Color?' or 'How are you doing?'
- Watch body language as well as words.
- Pause immediately on any yellow or red signal.
Ending well
Agree in advance on what signals the end, so nobody is left uncertain.
